Classification of Gas Turbine Generator Sets
1. Two categories as the following classified by their industrial usage:
1.1. Light-duty gas turbine, also known as Aero-derivatives, is a type of gas turbine (industrial and marine) that is modified from aero engines and is mainly used for mechanical drive and small power plants;
1.2. Industrial heavy-duty gas turbine is an industrial heavy-duty gas turbine developed following the traditional steam turbine concept, used for mechanical drive and large-scale power plants.
2. According to power output, it can be divided into the following three categories:
2.1. Small gas turbine gensets (between 1-4 MW), The smaller sized of these gas turbines in many cases have centrifugal compressors driven by radial inflow turbines, the larger sets in this range are usually axial-flow compressors sometimes combined with a centrifugal compressor at the last stage, and are operated by axial turbines;
2.2. Medium-sized gas turbine gensets (between 5-50 MW), these are a combination of aeroderivative and frame type turbine gensets. These gas turbine generator sets have axial-flow compressors and axial-flow turbines;
2.3. Large power gas turbine generator sets (between 50-600 MW), these are frame type gas turbine generator sets. The large gas turbine generator sets are operating at very high firing temperatures of about 1315 °C with cooling provided by steam, at pressure ratios approaching 35:1.
